Though the incidence of ovarian cancer was not alarming in India compared to other forms of the disease, it was emerging a silent killer as symptoms could not be easily identified.

Inaugurating a seminar on Ovarian Cancer, organised by the Department of Medical Oncology, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre at its campus in suburban Kattnakulathur,Tamil Nadu Health Secretary V K Subburaj said the prevalence rate of ovarian cancer was five per one lakh women.

”It is not that high in India when compared other cancer diseases “.

”It (Ovarian Cancer) is not that acute in our country,” he said and cautioned it had been emerging a silent killer as the symptoms of the disease were not easily identifiable.

Stating about 25,000 women suffered from Ovarian Cancer in India, he said 20 per cent of those affected died as it was fully developed by the time it was detected.

”Though a small number of women are affected in India, a mechanism should be evolved for early detection”.

”This is a big challenge, because symptoms are seen in other cancer diseases, unlike Ovarian Cancer.”
